Day trip to Rovinj

November 7, 2023

Rovinj is one of the most beautiful towns on the Croatian Adriatic coast – and anyone who has walked through the narrow lanes of its old town, climbed the bell tower of St. Euphemia’s Church, and looked out over the harbour, the sea, and the islands offshore will understand why. From Villa Verde, Rovinj is about 30 minutes away: perfect for a long day trip, or a relaxed evening with fresh fish right on the waterfront.

Old town and St. Euphemia’s Church

The old town rises on a small peninsula, its lanes winding steeply up to St. Euphemia’s Church – a striking example of Baroque architecture, home to the tomb of the saint and a pilgrimage site as much as a landmark. The bell tower is open to climb: from the top, on a clear day, you can see all the way to the Kvarner islands.

Below, the car-free lanes are lined with art galleries, small konobas, coffee bars, and boutiques. In summer the old town gets very busy in the afternoon – arrive before 9am or after 6pm and you’ll practically have the lanes to yourself.

Good to know
Parking right by the old town is very limited. The seafront car park (Obala palih boraca) is a 5-minute walk; the Valdibora multi-storey is about 8 minutes. In July and August, arrive early – finding a spot in the afternoon takes time.

Harbour and activities on the water

Our tip
Dinner at one of the fish restaurants right on the harbour is well worth it – fresh catch, a view of the water. A mixed fish platter for two costs around €40–60. Book ahead in summer.

The old harbour sits right next to the old town and is the natural heart of Rovinj. The best way to take it in is a walk along the promenade – stop at one of the harbour-side cafés and watch the fishing boats come and go.

For those who want to get out on the water: boat hire and excursion boats to the islands are available at the harbour. Katarina Island is a 5-minute ferry ride away, with quieter beaches away from the crowds. Excursion boats also run to Crveni Otok (Red Island), a pine-covered retreat just offshore.

Beaches: Baluota and Zlatni Rt

Baluota beach is a short walk from the town centre – rocky coves, clear water, bars and restaurants all around. A good spot for a swim between two old town strolls.

For more nature, head 20 minutes on foot or by car to Zlatni Rt Natural Park (Golden Cape): wide rocky coves, crystal-clear water, and a large pine forest that provides shade even on the hottest days. Walking trails follow the coastline with views out to the islands. Entry is free.

Day plan
Morning: old town and church tower (cool and quiet). Midday: Baluota beach or Zlatni Rt. Evening: walk along the Riva and dinner at the harbour. A perfect Rovinj day.

Rovinj Heritage Museum

Rovinj Heritage Museum, Istria

The Rovinj Heritage Museum is housed in a historic building in the heart of the old town and traces the history and traditions of the city from the Venetian era through to Istria’s fishing culture. Worth a visit on a hot afternoon or when a bit of shade and cool air is welcome.

What our guests say

The house is beautiful, with plenty of space for 7 people. The four bedrooms are nicely furnished, each with its own TV. The pool was definitely a highlight – sun loungers, parasols and towels were all ready, as was a charcoal grill. Very peaceful surroundings with shops and restaurants within walking distance. Stefan and Laura were always reachable. We had a wonderful holiday and would love to come back – highly recommended, great for families with children too!

One of the most beautiful houses in Višnjan! A lovingly renovated historic building, updated with all modern comforts. Višnjan has everything you need: a butcher, supermarkets, a pizzeria and a very good local restaurant. The sea is less than 15 minutes away. After a day out, the pool is perfect for cooling off. We felt very much at home and would love to return!

A beautiful house in a great location, just 20 minutes by car from the sea. I was there with 6 friends for a cycling race – the house was an absolute highlight and very well equipped. A wonderful retreat, especially for families. The village has great restaurants: from local cuisine to Italian pizza.

Very friendly host who responds to messages straight away. Clean pool with generous dimensions, completely renovated house and beautifully furnished rooms. One minor note: you can hear noise between floors – groups with different sleeping schedules should be aware of this.
