Road cycling in Istria is defined by its Mediterranean climate, varied terrain and a landscape that alternates between vineyards, olive groves and historic hilltop towns. Around Višnjan you will find quiet roads and little‑used connections that lead you both into the rolling inland and down towards the coast.

Every autumn, Poreč hosts the Istria300 – a major road cycling marathon with three distances of roughly 155, 235 and 300 kilometres on roads that are largely closed to traffic. Start and finish are located on the Adriatic coast, and the event attracts several thousand cycling enthusiasts from all over Europe each year.

From Villa Verde you can roll easily down to the start in Poreč in the morning – the approach is almost entirely downhill, perfect for a relaxed warm‑up before the race begins. Istria has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm, dry summers; it is slightly milder along the coast, and just a touch cooler in the inland areas around Višnjan. For road cyclists, spring and autumn are particularly attractive, with pleasant temperatures and roads that are much quieter than in the peak summer season.

The best time for training camps and cycling holidays is from March to early June and from mid‑September to the end of October; during these months, average daytime highs in nearby Poreč usually range between about 12 and 23 degrees. In the summer months from June to August, temperatures often climb far above 30 degrees, which is ideal for a beach holiday but can be too hot for intense road cycling, especially around midday.

This creates a riding experience that combines fast coastal sections, rolling terrain in the inland hills and longer climbs towards the Učka mountain range – offering everything you need for a varied and memorable road cycling holiday.

From Villa Verde, the route starts with a gentle climb before a first descent towards Karojba. After a short rise, you roll comfortably down to Motovun, where you can already stop for a coffee – although for most riders it will still feel a bit early. Beautiful switchbacks then lead down into the valley, and Livade offers another perfect spot for a brief pit stop; here it is worth taking the quieter side road to avoid traffic on the main road.

After a short section on the main road, you continue from the roundabout in the direction of Vižinada. The following climb is longer, steady and scenically very rewarding, with slightly rough tarmac in places that is still easy to ride uphill. A final descent then takes you back to Višnjan – just in time for a well‑earned coffee back at Villa Verde.

From Villa Verde, the route starts directly on quiet back roads towards Sveti Lovreč. The terrain is gently rolling at first, easy to ride and ideal for collecting relaxed kilometres. From Sveti Lovreč, the landscape opens up, the road becomes more flowing and takes you towards the coast with a series of gentle descents.

The closer you get to Poreč, the faster and flatter the profile becomes. Once you reach Poreč, it is well worth stopping at Garaž Beach Bar, located right on the beach – the perfect spot for a coffee with a sea view. The way back leads you into the slightly hilly inland again towards Višnjan. Overall, this is a varied loop with good road surfaces, little traffic and a great mix of quiet hinterland and coastal atmosphere.

• Duration: approx. 2 hours at an average speed of 25 km/h

From Villa Verde, the route begins with an easy warm‑up through the Istrian countryside. The first few kilometres are rolling and quiet, ideal for finding your rhythm. Via small country roads you head towards Buzet, where the landscape gradually becomes more alpine in character. From Buzet, the long, steady climb towards Vojak, the highest peak in Istria, begins; the gradient is never brutally steep, but the many kilometres of climbing demand patience and controlled pacing, with a fantastic view waiting at the top.

After the descent, the route continues towards Pazin on quiet roads with a constantly changing profile. Pazin is a great place for a short stop before tackling the final kilometres back towards Višnjan. The return leg is hilly but very rideable – a demanding, scenically impressive loop that makes for a proper long day in the saddle.
